In the UK the ,Construction, (Head Protection) Regulations 1989 and Docks Regulations 1988 both require suitable ,safety helmets, to be worn where there is a foreseeable risk of injury to the head. As for all sensible risk management, you need to assess the hazards and risks and take steps to reduce the risks until they are “as low as is reasonably practicable” (ALARP).
Requirements, for head protection are specified in section 22 of the ,Construction, Projects regulation (O. Reg. 213/91). The hard hat must protect the wearer’s head against impact and against small flying or falling objects.
